The winners of the 2019 Oscars have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It’s been a rather tumultous year for the Academy, all things considered. The organization announced several changes to the 2019 Oscars show over the past several months, as part of its efforts to battle the event’s dwindling ratings over the last decade. However, pretty much each and every change they announced (the Best Popular Film category, not performing all of the Original Song nominees, moving awards like Best Editing and Cinematography to the commercial breaks) went over badly and the Academy was quick to back-track on them. And mind you, that’s all on top of their failure to find a host for this year’s show.
Meanwhile, the actual Oscars race was more open this year than it’s been in recent memory. That’s especially true when it comes to Best Picture, where films ranging from Black Panther to Roma and Green Book were all felt to have an equally good chance of winning the top prize, following their victories at events like the SAG Awards and Golden Globes. Indeed, in a year full of poorly-received choices by the Academy and controversial awards season contenders like Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, there’s been a whole lot for film pundits to write about, ahead of the Oscar winners being revealed on Sunday night, February 24.
The full list of winners at the 91st Annual Academy Awards has now been unveiled. Green Book ultimately went home with the Best Picture Oscar and picked up additional prizes for its screenplay and Mahershala Ali’s supporting performance. The historical drama tied with Black Panther for three Oscar wins in total, with the latter becoming the first Marvel Studios film to ever win an Academy Award (much less, several of them). Roma also secured three Oscars at the event, but it was the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody that ended up winning the most Oscars overall with four in total, including an award for Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury.
