The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards were announced on January 13th, 2020. With many films being celebrated for many different categories, the big win will certainly be for the most prestigious category: Best Picture. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood - 7.8

It might be surprising for Tarantino fans to know that his ninth flick is actually at the bottom of this list. While it still scored a handful of nominations, this comedy crime drama managed a 7.8/10 on IMDb. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, this movie will take viewers on a hilarious and artistic treat through Hollywood’s Golden Age.

For all movie buffs, this film is no disappointment and still deserves a watch as a Best Picture nominee for its unique story, incredible acting, and devilish twists, which are all only to be expected from Quentin Tarantino.

Jojo Rabbit - 8.0

This comedy war drama stars a wonderful young actor, Roman Griffin Davis. He stars alongside Thomasin McKenzie and Scarlett Johansson. This movie follows a young boy in Hitler’s army, who finds out that his mother is keeping a Jewish girl hidden inside their house.

This movie is an underdog for the category, but definitely gave viewers a pleasurable and wholesome viewing experience. This is the quirkiest and funniest movie on the list and certainly deserves its recognition.

Marriage Story - 8.1

This comedy romance drama was directed by the raw and brilliant Noah Baumbach. The stars of the movie, Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern, ALL received nominations for their respective acting categories, and this movie is nominated for Best Picture and a few other categories, too.

With an 8.1/10, this movie’s honest and relatable tale of a coast-to-coast divorce is one of the most authentic movies on this list. Where a family must stay together through the couple’s divorce, this screenplay is absolutely brilliant, and the acting is the icing on the cake.

The Irishman - 8.1

Movie buffs might also have expected this Martin Scorsese directed film to make it higher on the list. It still managed an impressive 8.1/10 on IMDb, however, and this biography crime drama has the second most number of total nominations.

Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and many more, this film follows a mob hitman as he tells the story of his involvement with the infamous Jimmy Hoffa. This is an artistic treat of stellar acting, riveting violence and crime, and an infatuating story, and it’s likely that it will take home some Academy Awards on February 9th.

Ford v Ferrari - 8.3

This movie probably surprised viewers to make it on the list, but it also even ranks in the top 5 according to IMDb. This biography race-car drama tells the story of Carroll Shelby, a car designer, and driver Ken Miles, as they fight to create a car to compete against Ferrari in Le Mans in 1966. Starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, this true story is riveting, tragic, wholesome, and totally inspiring.

This movie also scored a few nominations and is a movie that everyone can enjoy. The cinematography, sound, acting, and story are some of its best features to raise its score to an 8.3.

Little Women - 8.3

Greta Gerwig directed this adaptation of the classic novel. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Timothee Chalamet, this cast and crew created a magical viewing experience. With brilliant acting, a wonderfully adapted screenplay, and directing genius from Gerwig, this movie certainly deserves a spot on this list.

This is the feel-good, inspiring tale that should certainly be considered for Best Picture. With acting and screenplay nominations, this movie should be taking home a few for its stunning visuals and authentic tale.

Parasite - 8.6

This Korean film is directed by the masterful Bong Joon Ho. This underrated and small-release film takes third place on this list, and should certainly not be underestimated. An impoverished family, all unemployed, stumble upon a wealthy and naive family. They infiltrate their household with deception, but this struggle for power certainly has its costs.

In a wonderfully honest, tragic, and dark tale of class and family, this movie’s intensity and pure family dynamics are everything that could make for a Best Picture win.

Joker - 8.6

Joker is holding the silver medal for most nominations for this year’s Academy Awards. In a darker and different twist on this iconic DC character, Joaquin Phoenix brings Arthur Fleck to life. Mistreated and misunderstood by society, he revolts into a downward spiral, stumbling upon crime and violence.

In his rise to become the Joker, director Todd Phillips creates a mysterious, infatuating, and tragic tale that gives so much life and power to this popular character. While no one expected a “superhero” film to be nominated for Best Picture, this one should definitely not be counted out, and stands a fighting chance for many categories.

1917 - 8.7

This war drama is taking the Academy Awards by storm. Taking the #1 spot on this list with an 8.7/10, director Sam Mendes tells a story of two young British soldiers during WWI, who must embark on a mission into enemy territory in an attempt to save 1,600 men from a deadly trap. Starring Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, and Daniel Mays, this movie has many nominations from Sound Mixing to Best Picture.

With brilliant cinematography, a gripping story, and stunning effects, this movie stands a real chance at taking home the win. As the newest release, viewers can still catch this one in theaters.
