Upcoming sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds had nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay footage revealed at last week’s Tokyo Games Show as documented by a Taiwanese website, showing off stilted conversations and in-game combat. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, creators of the massively popular Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Outer Worlds is a first person space adventure that will be releasing on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 25th, 2019, with a Nintendo Switch version coming later.
Often considered the best of the Bethesda-published Fallout games, New Vegas set itself apart from Fallout 3 by featuring multiple factions the player could interact with in different, story-changing ways. The combination of branching plot lines, different ending sequences depending on choices made in-game, and faction malleability was a hit with fans, and Obsidian has previously stated The Outer Worlds will also feature several different factions and a branching story which will react to player decisions.
Gameplay shown off in the TGS 2019 video, which was recently posted to YouTube and contains English dialogue accompanying Japanese in-game text, features conversations and shooting segments that will feel quite familiar to former Fallout fans, albeit with a few quality of life changes. The player character does not seem to speak verbally, instead picking from a list of full sentences as opposed to the much hated “mood response selector wheel” of Fallout 4. Multiple conversations are started in the video, showing off exchanges between both human characters and a space ship’s artificial intelligence, but nearly all lines of dialogue are cut short by the person playing, who continuously skips forward through the spoken lines in order to get to the combat. It’s also worth noting this is not an official video from the developer.
These more action-packed segments of The Outer Worlds TGS gameplay video above show off both gun and melee combat, and it seems like certain enemies will cower and cease attacking if frightened or heavily damaged. Some enemies can also be dismembered, bringing to mind Fallout’s Bloody Mess perk. Numbers fly out of opponents’ bodies as they are wounded in a Borderlands-type fashion, and the act of looting their corpses does not pause the game. Earlier this year at PAX East, Obsidian even featured an Outer Worlds gameplay demo which allowed players to kill literally anyone in the game they wanted.
As The Outer Worlds recent trailer shows, the game will also contain the trademark tongue-in-cheek satirical humor many Obsidian games are known for. With a slightly Western steampunk futurism theme and classic-looking gameplay, perhaps The Outer Worlds truly is shaping up to be the science fiction spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas that fans have always wanted. Whether or not there will be a planet full of well-dressed cannibals and hidden underground boxing matches, sadly, remains to be seen.
