Parks & Rec is one of America’s most beloved shows, and while we’re sad that it’s over, we can’t help but look back on all of the predictions made in the show that came to fruition. The seventh and final season took place during 2017, but it aired in 2015, which means that much of it called for speculation about the future, from entertainment to technology.
While some of the predictions were downright goofy, others were pretty spot-on, leaving us to wonder if Professor Smartbrain Ben and his accounting friends somehow got a hold of a time machine. Of course, if Leslie’s husband were to manipulate a time machine, he’s probably just using it to go back to the 90s and roller skate with his wife.
A Bourne Sequel Happened
While the Jason Bourne movies never did feature Kevin James as the titular character, there was definitely another Bourne movie made after the 2015 season of Parks & Rec, which was meant to take place in 2017. In 2016, the film Jason Bourne was released, which would have been the movie referenced.
Andy said the film was supposed to be “pretty funny,” which was not the case, and Leslie quoted Bourne, saying, “This is where it started for me, this is where it ends.” Ben went on to note that Kevin James was a weird choice for the role, which would have been true had it happened.
The Cubs Won
There hasn’t been an epic battle between Morgan Freeman and Shailene Woodley, but one prediction that came true surprised the entire world even more: the Cubs won the World Series.
This prediction isn’t as inventive as many others the show made, given the fact that it’s been a running joke for a long, long time, and many writers have implemented it into movies and TV shows as a sort of sports metaphor for Hell freezing over. Since 2016 when the Cubs won, a new metaphor is needed to express a long shot, and Cubs fans couldn’t be happier about it.
Drone Deliveries
Whether or not the Ron Swansons of the world have shot their drone deliverers to death or not, Prime Air will be able to deliver a package via small drones in 30 minutes or less if it’s under five pounds, and it’s sure to change the world one way or another.
A Man Won Woman Of The Year
Bruce Willis and Christina Aguilera certainly haven’t gotten together as far as any of us know, so the Hollywood tour guide in season seven didn’t make a sound prediction there. But a man did win the coveted “Woman of the Year” award that Leslie Knope constantly aspired to. It wasn’t Ron Swanson or Ben Wyatt, but Bono who won the award, sponsored by Glamour, in 2016.
After all of the work that Leslie had done for not only the city of Pawnee but the state of Indiana and later the country itself, we do hope that she eventually won the “Woman of the Year” Award from the Pawnee chapter of the Indiana Organization of Women, and that she and Elise eventually become friends.
VR Headsets Became Big
Elton John has not purchased Chick-Fil-A, nor will he likely ever do so (although it would be amazing if he did). But Dennis Feinstein’s virtual reality headset definitely took the world by storm, and many gamers now have them in their living rooms to enjoy the most realistic gaming experiences we’ve ever had. Feinstein, played by Jason Mantzoukas, may not have used his in the same way, but he looked like any other gamer while wearing his VR headset.
Virtual Reality headsets weren’t invented since season seven, but they certainly became a household item as common as many other tech devices that have since made it mainstream.
Same-Sex Marriage Became Legal
A long, hard battle finally resulted in the legality of same-sex marriage in the United States in 2015, so what better way was there to predict it happening than Craig and Typhoon’s wedding months earlier during the final season of Parks & Rec? Ron Swanson even served as Best Man, which made his and Typhoon’s tiny arc come full circle.
The only thing regrettable about this adorable and hilarious relationship was that it didn’t happen until season seven. Many fans would love to see much more Craig and Typhoon goodness, even if it meant a spin-off featuring the cantankerous parks department employee and Donna and Ron’s astute hairdresser.
The 2016 Presidential Election
While Joe Biden has yet to write Biden the Rails: 1,001 Poems Inspired by My Travels Through Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, Leslie Knope’s campaign for city council in season four was spot-on for the 2016 American Presidential campaign between a completely capable candidate with years of experience against a wealthy yet clueless candidate with zero experience who only has power because of his parents.
Both women won their respective elections, but Leslie, who won with just a handful of votes, didn’t have the Electoral College to contend with. Both faced ridiculous smear campaigns and deep disdain mostly due to their gender, too.
There’s Been A Twin Peaks Reboot
We haven’t seen Niki Minaj throw shade “at Jesse Eisenberg at the BAFTAs,” as Tom’s partner Lucy recalled in 2017, but we have seen a Twin Peaks reboot, and it’s just as beloved as Ben Wyatt would have hoped it would be. Released in 2017, the reboot featured 18 episodes and ran on Showtime. Fans also know it as its other titles, Twin Peaks: The Return and Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series.
Written by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the series follows the 1990s series and FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper’s dramatic adventures. It was considered the best TV show of that year by many sources, which would have tickled Ben Wyatt pink.
Data Mining
As far as we know, no one is bedazzling their elbows or lasering their fingernails since the show’s fashion and beauty trend predictions aired, but Facebook recently came under fire for similar practices to the data mining that Gryzzl had done on the citizens of Pawnee.
To be fair, it wasn’t really anything new in 2017, and most people assume that everything from their phone to their smart TV and the apps they use could be, and likely is, collecting information about them at all times. The big controversy that went to the government did make Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony feel like deja vu, though.
Game Of Thrones Went “Off The Rails”
While Daenerys Targaryen never married Captain Jack Sparrow, she certainly went “off the rails,” as Leslie Knope predicted in the final season of Parks & Rec. The series finale of Game of Thrones was much more surprising than the P&R final season, to the point where fans became enraged, demanding a “do-over” after the khaleesi herself went mad, destroyed citizens who surrendered to her and fell at the hand of her own nephew/lover, Jon Snow.
Fans who’d followed the series from day one, particularly the readers, read all of the clues about Jon’s parentage and expected the “three-headed dragon” prophesied to rule Westeros would be Dany, Jon, and Tyrion Lannister. When Bran Stark took the throne, it at least fulfilled Leslie’s prophecy.
