Sony Pictures releases a new trailer and poster for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. Based on the stories written by Beatrix Potter, the character of Peter Rabbit first appeared in 1902. The anamorphic animal has since popped up in a number of adaptations. Directed by Will Gluck, with the title character voiced by James Corden, the first installment produced by Sony Pictures was a successful attempt at bringing the world that Potter created to the screen. Now, in the second outing, that world seems to be expanding.
Peter Rabbit was released in 2018. A blend of live action and computer animation, the movie began with Peter Rabbit causing Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill) trouble in his vegetable garden. Helped along with his three sisters, and his cousin, Peter made a regular habit of this. Until, one day, Mr. McGregor passes away. Thomas, played by Domhnall Gleeson, inherits McGregor’s home. With the rabbits running around as they please, Thomas finds far more than he was prepared for. His plans to renovate the home and resale it is met with resistance from the rabbits and a battle of wills comes next. The differences between Peter and Thomas are further complicated by the feelings that Thomas has for Bea (Rose Byrne) who is something of a motherly figure to the rabbits. These differences, at least at first, appear to be a thing of the past in the new trailer for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.
As the trailer begins, Bea and Thomas are just about to officially tie the knot in a beautiful wedding ceremony. Though the scene is initially joyful and optimistic, it quickly becomes clear that there are still some unresolved issues between Peter and Thomas. These issues, as suggested by the movie’s title, lead Peter to run away. Wanting to prove that he’s as bad as Thomas claims he is, Peter wanders off on his own and mutters unhappily to himself. His tone changes, however, when he meets an older rabbit who claims to have been a friend of Peter’s father. Check out the trailer in full, and the poster, below.
In addition to Corden, Byrne, and Gleeson, who are all returning for the sequel, it was previously announced that David Oyelowo would be joining the cast in an undisclosed live-action role. Margot Robbie, Daisy Riddle, and Elizabeth Debicki are also lending their voices to Peter Rabbit for a second time. Gluck, known for helming comedies like Easy A and About Last Night, is likewise resuming his role behind the camera.
The family feature boasts some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Corden recently renewed his contract to continue hosting his late night show. Ridley is heavily involved in the Star Wars franchise, while Robbie’s gearing up for another turn as Harley Quinn. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is a different sort of film. But as the first installment did, it’s likely to find an audience when it hits theaters in April 2020.
