Preacher is coming back to AMC for a second season of outrageously violent and hilarious supernatural mayhem. At the close of season 1, Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy were just about the only cast members left alive after the methane explosion that leveled Annville. Our trio of protagonists talked the situation over in a diner and decided to embark upon a quest to go and find God (since the “God” they met when Jesse fired up the angel phone turned out to be a fraud). Of course, the preacher-killing Cowboy is also looking for Jesse.
With everything set up for a road trip filled with, in Tulip’s own words “shooting people, getting wasted, and looking for God,” Preacher now has to refill its decimated cast of supporting characters. Season 2 will have plenty of new regulars to establish alongside returning stars Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun, Ian Colletti, and Graham McTavish.
That season 2 supporting cast is now beginning to fill out, as reported by Deadline. Noah Taylor (Peaky Blinders), Pip Torrens (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Julie Ann Emery (Fargo) have signed on as regulars, with specific roles to be revealed at a later date. Malcolm Barrett (Dear White People), Ronald Guttman (Homeland), and Justin Prentice (13 Reasons Why) have joined the cast in recurring roles.
Though this casting news doesn’t include any specific details about character names, there’s a very good chance (just based on the actor’s appearance) that Pip Torrens is playing Herr Starr, a villain from the comic book who is known to be part of season 2. Starr is a former West German agent who acts as an executioner for a mysterious order called The Grail whose mission is to bring about the birth of the Messiah. Starr was briefly glimpsed in season 1 but at the time we had no idea who he was. Noah Taylor is arguably the biggest name among the new regulars, but who he will be playing is anyone’s guess at this point.
Other comic book characters expected to show up at some point in season 2 (or beyond) are the freelance journalist/serial killer Reaver Cleaver, Jesse’s wheelchair-bound grandmother Marie L’Angelle and her bodyguard Jody. In the comics, Jody was the guy who taught Jesse to fight and the two had a contentious relationship. No doubt there will be some other surprising character reveals throughout the second season.
Production on season 2 of Preacher has already begun as revealed by Dominic Cooper in a recent social media post. AMC has yet to announce a return date for the series but that information should be coming along soon. The second season will have 13 carnage-filled episodes, up from 10 in season 1.
