The five main characters of Pretty Little Liars are often the most talked about as they’re stylish, full of secrets, and the focus of the drama over seven thrilling seasons. Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson), Alison DiLaurentis (Sascha Pieterse), and Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) are all interesting characters who keep fans guessing every episode.
But there are tons of other characters on this show, from partners to teachers and family members and acquaintances, and some of them aren’t quite so adored. Here are the 10 most hated supporting characters on Pretty Little Liars.
10. Darren Wilden
Darren Wilden (Bryce Johnson) is one of the most hated supporting characters on Pretty Little Liars as he doesn’t like the liars and so fans of the show don’t like him. He definitely thinks the worst of them and it seems like he wants to get them for Ali’s death. In the early days of the series, he’s the detective who gets Hanna in trouble for shoplifting, which is frustrating because it’s clear that she’s struggling and having a tough time.
It’s even more awkward when Darren and Hanna’s mom Ashley (Laura Leighton) start seeing each other, especially when Ashley starts blackmailing him. He wants to charm everyone, but he’s a creep (and no one is sad when he eventually dies).
9. Melissa Hastings
Melissa Hasting is definitely one of the most hated supporting characters on Pretty Little Liars. Played by Torrey DeVitto, she is Spencer’s meaner, older sister who randomly pops in and out of the show.
She’s a pretty boring character, especially since it’s always hinted that she knows more than she’s letting on about Ali’s disappearance, but it takes so long to get the goods that it honestly falls flat. By the time she says in the fifth season episode “No One Here Can Love or Understand Me” that she believed that Spencer murdered Ali and so she buried Bethany Young alive, it’s not enough to save this dull character.
8. Yvonne Phillips
Fans meet Yvonne Phillips (Kara Royster) near the end of the series as she and Toby Cavanagh (Keegan Allen) are engaged and then married. And right from the start, it’s obvious that they don’t belong together because, of course, he and Spencer need to live happily ever after.
Because Yvonne isn’t Spencer, that automatically makes her an unlikeable character, but more than that, she’s just not super interesting.
7. Jenna Marshall
Thanks to “The Jenna Thing,” aka the night when the girls are responsible for Jenna losing her eyesight as Ali lets off a stink bomb that then explodes in Spencer’s barn.
Jenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok) should be a sympathetic character as that is absolutely horrible and no one should have to go through that. Instead, she’s annoying and mean and always seems like she’s up to no good.
6. Dianne Fitzgerald
Ezra’s mom, Dianne Fitzgerald (Mary Page Keller), is one of the most unlikeable characters on Pretty Little Liars. She’s Type A and completely unsupportive of Ezra (Ian Harding). Viewers learn that he grew up in the type of wealthy family where appearance matters more than happiness and inner peace, and he doesn’t have a good relationship with his mother.
Even though it’s a bit creepy that Ezra and Aria have such a big age gap between them, he’s a kind-hearted person, so it’s impossible to like a character who isn’t on his side.
5. Nicole Gordon
Nicole Gordon (Rebecca Breeds) is another much-hated supporting character because she seems totally unnecessary. In order to create drama between Ezra and Aria, the show created Nicole, his fiance who disappears when they’re in South America.
The truth is that Ezra and Aria have enough drama (perhaps too much) because of their age difference and the many ups and downs that they experience because of it, so it’s hard to care about Nicole. The show mentions her several times but finally, Aria and her one true love get back together, and fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief.
4. Jason DiLaurentis
Ali’s brother Jason DiLaurentis (Drew Van Acker) is definitely weird and off-putting, randomly coming back to the show after some time away and leaving fans wondering what he had been doing… but not in an intriguing, good way.
He’s a frustrating character as he seems to serve no purpose. Ali has enough mystery surrounding her that it would have been better if she was an only child. Like Nicole, Jason seems pretty unnecessary.
3. Byron Montgomery
Aria’s dad Byron (Chad Lowe) is super awkward to watch and seems like the kind of TV dad who really doesn’t know how to talk to or connect with his kids. That has been seen enough times before and it’s nothing new here.
He also cheats on their mom, Ella (Holly Marie Combs), so even though they move past it and get re-married, he’s still a character who is very easy to hate. The other liars’ parents are much more well-developed, including Emily’s sweet mom Pam (Nia Peeples) who becomes a widow later on in the show and Spencer’s ambitious mom Veronica (Lesley Fera).
2. Sydney Driscoll
Sydney Driscoll (Chloe Bridges) is another hated supporting character on Pretty Little Liars and also brings up the question as why she was added to the show. The series is so mysterious and has so many loose threads at any given time that it can feel like there are just too many characters to keep track of.
She is on the high school swim team with Emily, but the girls learn that she’s their enemy. Instead of being a fun villain, though, Sydney is just boring.
1. Wren Kingston
Wren Kingston (Julian Morris) just might be the most hated supporting character to show up on Pretty Little Liars. He’s incredibly manipulative and he plays with Spencer’s heart at various times throughout the show.
In the beginning, he and Melissa are in a serious relationship, but he flirts with Spencer and creates an awkward (but juicy) love triangle. Then it turns out that he’s pure evil, as he’s been in a relationship with Spencer’s twin, Alex Drake, and the two of them have been working against the main characters. We knew that we didn’t like him…
