Pretty Little Liars kicked off its seventh and final season with an episode that saw the Liars race to save Hanna from the clutches of Uber A. The news that Freeform’s long-running mystery drama Pretty Little Liars would be coming to an end after season 7 came as a blow to the show’s loyal fandom. Though fans were forced to bid farewell to their favorite show, at least Pretty Little Liars went out with a bang as its season 7 premiere “Tick-Tock, Bitches” proved.
Before getting into Pretty Little Liars season 7 episode 1, let’s briefly recap some key moments from the end of the show’s sixth season. In the penultimate season 6 episode “Did You Miss Me?” Hanna (Ashley Benson) falsely confessed to Uber A she was Charlotte’s (Vanessa Ray) killer in a bid to learn the identity of their new stalker. However, Hanna’s plan backfired in the finale when she was abducted by Uber A. The season closed with a scene that saw a mysterious figure dragging an unconscious Hanna towards the Rosewood Church bell tower.
Pretty Little Liars season 7 episode 1 picked up where that cliffhanger left viewers with Uber A (now calling themselves A.D.) taunting the Liars with messages informing them they had 24 hours to deliver Charlotte’s real killer or Hanna would die. The rest of the Liars scrambled as they tried to work out the identity of both A.D. and Charlotte’s killer, as other scenes showed a beaten and bloody Hanna being held captive in an abandoned barn and hallucinating Spencer (Troian Bellisario) was there with her.
After realizing Jessica DiLaurentis’ twin sister Mary Drake (Andrea Parker) was in Rosewood, the Liars surmised she must be their mystery stalker and Hanna’s abductor. A possible admission of guilt from Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) had Emily (Shay Mitchell) thinking she was responsible for Charlotte’s death. Emily’s suspicions seemed confirmed when she discovered a red sweater at Alison’s house – the same sweater Aria (Lucy Hale) saw on somebody who was following Charlotte the night she was killed.
Just as Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) informed A.D. that Alison was Charlotte’s killer and where they could find the red sweater as evidence, Hanna managed to escape the barn. She ran to a road where she flagged down a passing car only to find the driver was none other than Mary Drake. Although Hanna was finally free of A.D.’s clutches, Mary showing up at that exact moment threw the Liars’ theory she was A.D. out the window. Later episodes of Pretty Little Liars would offer further clues as to A.D.’s identity but it wouldn’t be until the series finale that the mystery was finally solved.
