It’s been over two years since season 7 aired but will Pretty Little Liars season 8 ever happen? Based on the novel series of the same name by Sara Shepherd, Pretty Little Liars aired its first season in 2010 on ABC Family (now Freeform). The show was set in the seemingly perfect suburban town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania and followed its five protagonists – Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Hannah Marin (Ashley Benson), Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) and Alison DeLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) – in the aftermath of queen bee Alison’s apparent disappearance.
Seven seasons and a whole lot of crazy plot twists later, the so-called Liars had been through all kinds of drama including - but by no means limited to - faking their deaths, being stalked and getting caught up in several murders, a few of which they committed themselves. Unfortunately for Pretty Little Liars fans, showrunner I. Marlene King announced in 2016 the show’s seventh season would be it’s last.
The final episode “Til Death Do Us Part” aired in June 2017 but not everybody was quite ready to say goodbye to the show, so is there hope for Pretty Little Liars season 8?
There Are No Plans For Pretty Little Liars Season 8
While showrunner I. Marlene King has expressed an interest in returning someday for Pretty Little Liars season 8 or even a movie, there are currently no signs of the show coming back. The series finale tied up a lot of loose ends, so while there’s scope for the story to continue, the show has wrapped up for the time being.
The Show Received A Spinoff with Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists
Though Pretty Little Liars season 8 is, at present, just a pipe dream there is something that can fill the Liars-shaped void - spinoff series Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. The show is the third Pretty Little Liars spinoff following web series Pretty Dirty Secrets and short-lived supernatural drama Ravenswood. Set a few years after the conclusion of the main show, The Perfectionists moves the action to the Pacific Northwest.
The Perfectionists also features two Pretty Little Liars characters. Alison DeLaurentis moves to Beacon Heights after taking a teaching job at the local university and bumps into old frenemy Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish), who also works there. If Alison and Mona were thinking a move out west would take them away from all the murder and backstabbing in Rosewood, they’re unfortunately mistaken after they find themselves caught up in the murder of a Beacon Heights University student. It might not be Pretty Little Liars season 8 but with its similar premise and two crossover characters, The Perfectionists is as close to an eighth season as fans can get.
