PUBG is set to get an 8v8 team deathmatch mode sometime in the future, as the development team teased the mode on YouTube, releasing a minute-long trailer showcasing the seven announced maps and the fast-paced gameplay sure to excite some fans. PUBG is known for its battle royale mode which took the world by storm shortly after its release in March of 2017.

The battle royale quickly exploded on Steam, seeing exponential growth over the course of the year through early 2018. It peaked with a groundbreaking three million concurrent players, shattering all records on Steam and becoming the most popular online game on the platform. Battle royales quickly caught on after PUBG’s rise in popularity, with Epic releasing Fortnite in late 2017. On the 22nd of January, a brand new map and battle pass were released on PC, creating a surge in players.

PUBG’s official blog revealed much of the information about the game’s new mode, called Team Deathmatch. Most importantly, it will be first-person only. The battle royale mode is bifurcated into a third-person mode and first-person mode respectively. Other information includes having spawn kits available, meaning that players will be able to select their loadouts similar to Call of Duty or Battlefield. While this is a team-based mode, it will not utilize the “knock-down” system of the battle royale. There will also be no friendly fire and the player will have health regeneration.

The game mode also includes win conditions and a round-based system. Players have 10 minutes to try and score 50 kills before the timer runs out. Although there will be currency awarded for players, PUBG Corporation did say that those who have bought the battle pass do not receive progress in it. There will be seven unique maps that feature key locations from the base game’s four maps, excluding the recently released fifth. These smaller maps should create for fast-paced gameplay that mimics arena shooters rather than the stealthy, slow-paced nature of the genre.

PUBG hasn’t seen the same amount of growth since its peak in January of 2018. Even then, it retains a respectable player base on steam lingering in second and third place behind Valve’s own shooter, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and DOTA 2. The game also has an impressive mobile fanbase as well as a ported version on Xbox and Playstation. In October of 2019, PUBG Corporation announced that it launched limited cross-play between the Xbox and Playstation only. This was otherwise unheard of until Fortnite received similar treatment in late 2018. Unlike its competitor, Fortnite, PUBG does not allow cross-play between platforms with PC or mobile. With the release of the upcoming deathmatch mode as well as an announced narrative experience, PUBG could be seeking to expand its demographics outside of the battle royale genre.
